Jürg Frey - Composer, alone (Reinier van Houdt) (elsewhere 030-3) ‘Composer, alone’ is a collection of twelve solo piano pieces by Swiss composer Jürg Frey, performed by Dutch pianist/composer Reinier van Houdt. It is the sequel to the 2022 triple album 'lieues d'ombres' (elsewhere 020-3) and the third collaboration between Frey and van Houdt on elsewhere music. The two have cultivated a close rapport, first documented on 'l'air, l'instant - deux pianos' (elsewhere 014) in 2020. This three-disc set features a wide range of Frey's solo piano compositions from 1990 to 2024, including his latest piano pieces 'Composer, alone (1)' and 'Composer, alone (2)'. This three-disc album traces Frey's journey over the past 30 years as he explores his voice as a composer through piano works. It reveals how his compositional style has evolved, while also demonstrating that the underlying essence of his compositions remains consistent. As a pianist who has a deep connection to the music of Frey, van Houdt skillfully reveals the subtleties hidden in Frey's compositions, as he did in 'lieues d'ombres'. Staying true to the composer's vision, van Houdt captures the essence of Frey's diverse piano pieces from the past 34 years while achieving a perfect balance between fragility, warmth, and clarity. All twelve pieces were recorded by Micha de Kanter at the Muziekcentrum van de Omroep (MCO) in Hilversum over three days in September 2024, in the presence of the composer, and mastered by Taku Unami. The album cover features Frey's drawings. (CD release: September 20, 2025)

In order to help fund our upcoming releases, we are offering 20% off everything (CDs and digital on elsewhere, Erstwhile, Gravity Wave) through May 31 at midnight PST, both on Bandcamp and the label sites*. The sale starts immediately, we have many new titles in the works on both elsewhere and Erstwhile, and any support is very helpful and much appreciated. If you are buying via Bandcamp, please note that this Friday is Bandcamp Friday, so if you order then, we'll receive more of the proceeds. coupon code: 2025 *We will refund any excess shipping charges if Bandcamp charges too much or if you place orders with more than one of our labels. If you prefer, you can buy all three labels' titles together on the Erstwhile site. ----------- a reminder of the best ways to order from us these days: US customers: here or on our Bandcamp, whichever you prefer. If you want to add Erstwhile or Gravity Wave (both 20% off) or ErstDist items, you can order both on this site, or please order directly to save your shipping fee, e-mail us at [email protected]. International customers: taxes and customs charges and shipping charges have made it very pricy in recent years, as you probably know. If you order digital files here on this site or directly by email, you will save money on VAT (while Bandcamp will charge tax), and if your order is bigger than a few CDs, send it to us via e-mail: erstrecs(at)gmail(dot)com and we will get you the proper shipping charges, and we are happy to give you Bandcamp codes also after payment. If you want to order just 1-2 CDs, our site or Bandcamp should be fine, but if you want more, please e-mail us before ordering and we'll get you the proper shipping charges. We appreciate your very kind support of our labels, past and future, and hope you will be able to take advantage of this sale. Thanks for looking and hopefully participating! Yuko We are very happy to announce the first release for 2025 on elsewhere, to be out in early March. (We accept CD preorders here and on Bandcamp.) Sarah Hennies - SOVT (richard valitutto) (elsewhere 034) 'SOVT' is an album containing one 55-minute piece, written for piano by Sarah Hennies in 2017. SOVT stands for Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract which refers to vocal exercises that strengthens the voice by helping the vocal cords vibrate more efficiently. One may practice SOVT exercises by singing with a straw in the mouth which regulates air pressure and reduces strain on the vocal folds. Hennies encountered these exercises in a class on so-called “voice feminization” for transgender women which also inspired her other works “Falsetto” and “Contralto." Almost all the strings of the piano in this piece are muted with Blu-Tack poster putty and this along with the rhythmic language of the piece results in a sound that is a hybrid piano/percussion-like sound. By connecting all the strings with putty, a dramatically rich sympathetic vibration occurs throughout the piano similar to the way in which one feels increased vibration in the mouth and throat by singing through a straw. SOVT was originally commissioned by R. Andrew Lee and for this recording was performed by richard valitutto, who recorded the work at the Bard College studio in the spring of 2024 with Hennies engineering. (CD release: March 1, 2025) To help fund our upcoming release projects (many exciting projects on the way from both elsewhere and Erstwhile) and to clear some much-needed storage space, we are offering free shipping on all orders over $50 (domestic shipping in the US) and $140 (international shipping) through February 9th. This applies to everything we have in stock, including recent releases, on Erstwhile, elsewhere, Gravity Wave and ErstDist (https://www.erstwhilerecords.com/erstdist.html), every in print release through 2024. It does not apply to pre-orders for upcoming releases, those must be placed in a separate order. All orders must be made directly via email ([email protected]), send us the list of what you want and we'll make sure we have it all and send you back a total, then you can pay via PayPal and we are happy to send DL/Bandcamp codes for releases on our labels (not ErstDist titles) if you like, just let us know if you want digital as well. We are also concerned that the US Postal Service may become more expensive and chaotic in the near future under the new US administration beginning this month, so if you are planning to place CD orders from overseas, we recommend that you take advantage of this sale before things get complicated. We appreciate your kind support of our labels, past and future, and hope you can take advantage of this sale. Thanks for looking and wishing everyone a good year despite the crazy times... Yuko https://www.elsewheremusic.net/ https://www.erstwhilerecords.com/ This album contains three new works by Italian composer Giuliano d'Angiolini, ')))(((', '7 flauti', and '100100', following his previous three albums: 'Simmetrie di ritorno' (Edition RZ, 2010), ‘Cantilena’ (Another Timbre, 2016) and ‘Antifona’ (Another Timbre, 2020). ')))(((' was composed in 2023 for four flutes and sheng or accordion, or six clarinets, and the version here is for four flutes and six clarinets. It is recommended to listen at high volume. '7 flauti' was written in 2010 for seven flutes, and '100100' was written in 2023 for 36 flutes. Both '7 flauti' and '100100' follow strict procedures of indeterminacy. Thus, at each performance they sound differently. Performers are Manuel Zurria on flute (Track 1, 2, 3) and Paolo Ravaglia on clarinet (Track 1). “I was particularly interested in the roughness of sounds, acoustic beats and combination (resultant) tones. These tones do not exist physically, they are produced by the brain: we hear them inside our heads. I like the feeling they produce inside us, as if we were a sound source ourselves; which makes us lose our distance from the sound and a bit of our own integrity.” — Giuliano d’Angiolini (CD release: December 1, 2924) Very happy to share the cover design of Giuliano d’Angiolini - )))((( , to be released in mid-December. Cover artwork by Giuliano d’Angiolini (elsewhere 033)
CD pre-orders will start here on the elsewhere site and Bandcamp next week! very happy to announce an upcoming new CD on elsewhere, to be released in mid-December. Giuliano d’Angiolini - )))((( elsewhere 033 I first came to know Giuliano d'Angiolini's work in 2018, shortly after starting my label elsewhere, when I listened to his Cantilena (Another Timbre), a great album that is still one of my favorite releases on AT. Since then, I've been hoping to feature his work on elsewhere one day, so I am deeply honored to be able to release the latest project by d'Angiolini, one of my favorite contemporary composers. This album contains three new works by d'Angiolini: a piece for four flutes and six clarinets, a piece for seven flutes and a piece for 36 flutes, all performed by Manuel Zurria on flute and Paolo Ravaglia on clarinet. CD preorders will start in November. very happy to announce a new triple CD project to be released on elsewhere in early 2025. Jürg Frey: Composer, alone (Reinier van Houdt) (elsewhere 030-3) I am extremely thrilled about this project, which will be a sequel to the 2022 triple album 'lieues d'ombres' with Jürg and Reinier, also on elsewhere. This new triple album will feature nine more of Jürg Frey's solo piano pieces, including two newly written in 2024, 'Composer, alone' (1) and (2). All tracks will be recorded at The Muziekcentrum van de Omroep (MCO) in Hilversum this September, with the composer's presence. To help fund this project, we are offering the following special deals for elsewhere titles through July 28th. Please check out the link here. |
