Laura Cetilia - gorgeous nothings (elsewhere 035)

Laura Cetilia's cello works evoke the sense of crossing the threshold between traditional classical music and experimental soundscapes. Within an acoustic resonance that respects the natural reverberations of a space, rippling waves of subtle disturbances conjure a mixed sensation of classical roots and a refreshing encounter with the unknown. This offers a glimpse into a vast and profound world that is uniquely Cetilia's own.

'gorgeous nothings' is an album of three pieces composed by Cetilia, a US-based composer and cellist who won the ARTZenter's Emerging Composer Completion Grant in September 2024. This is her second appearance on elsewhere music, following Jürg Frey's 2018 release, '120 Pieces of Sound', for which she performed a pivotal cello part as a member of Ordinary Affects. The album 'gorgeous nothings' contains Cetilia's solo piece for cello and voice, which she performed herself; her trio piece for violin, cello, and vibraphone, performed by Ordinary Affects; and a piece for cello duo, performed by n/ether, a duo she formed with cellist Hannah Soren. 

The trio piece 'six melancholies' was recorded at Memorial Chapel, Wesleyan University in 2017; the solo piece 'gorgeous nothing' and duo piece 'soil + stone' were recorded at Community MusicWorks in Providence, Rhode Island in August 2025. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Luke Damrosch.

ローラ・セティリア『gorgeous nothings』(elsewhere 036)

ローラ・セティリアのチェロ作品は、伝統的なクラシック音楽と実験的なサウンドスケープの境界を行き来する不思議な感覚を呼び起こす。空間の自然な残響を生かしたアコースティックな共鳴の中で、楽器の音から生まれる微かな揺らぎの波紋が、クラシック音楽のルーツと未知なるものとの新鮮な出会いの瞬間を生み、セティリア独自の広大で深遠な作品世界へ聴き手を引き込む。
 
本作『gorgeous nothings』は、米国を拠点とする作曲家兼チェロ奏者、セティリアの作曲による3曲を収録したアルバムである。彼女は2024年9月に「ARTZenter新進作曲家コンペティション助成金」を獲得している。今回のアルバムは、彼女がオーディナリー・アフェクツの一員として重要なチェロパートを担当したユルク・フライの2018年CD『120 Pieces of Sound』に続く、elsewhere musicレーベルでの2度目の登場となる。
 
このアルバムには、セティリア自身の演奏によるチェロとヴォイスのためのソロ作品、彼女を含むオーディナリー・アフェクツの演奏によるヴァイオリン、チェロ、ビブラフォンのための三重奏曲、そしてチェロ奏者のハンナ・ソレンと結成したデュオ「n/ether」によるチェロ二重奏曲が収録されている。
 
三重奏曲『six melancholies』は2017年にウェズリアン大学メモリアル・チャペルで録音。ソロ作品『gorgeous nothing』と二重奏曲『soil + stone』は2025年8月、ロードアイランド州プロビデンスのコミュニティ・ミュージックワークスで録音された。

​Samuel Reinhard  - For 10 Musicians (elsewhere 036)

Samuel Reinhard returns to elsewhere music with 'For 10 Musicians,' a four-part ensemble piece recorded in 2025 at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. In each movement, two pianists are assigned a single chord and asked to repeat it at a pace of their choosing for the duration of the piece. Between repetitions, the pianists play a short figure improvised from a set group of notes. They are joined by wind and string players—two clarinets, two bass clarinets, two violas, a cello, and a double bass—who choose and play individual notes from that same group. As in Reinhard’s previous work, the players are instructed to play as quietly as they can while still producing a sound, and are invited to take extended breaks, playing as much or as little as they would like within their assigned duration.

サミュエル・ラインハルト『10人の演奏者のために』(elsewhere 036)

ニューヨーク在住のスイス人作曲家サミュエル・ラインハルトによる『10人の演奏者のために』は、2025年にコペンハーゲンのデンマーク王立音楽アカデミーで録音された4部構成のアンサンブル作品。本作は、2024年にリリースされたラインハルトの『For Piano and Shō』(elsewhere 032)に続く、elsewhere musicにおける彼の作品集の第二弾。

今回のアルバムでは、各楽章において2人のピアニストに単一の和音が割り当てられ、作品全体を通して各自のペースでそれを繰り返すよう指示される。反復の合間には、ピアニストは決められた音群から短いフレーズを即興で演奏する。これに管弦楽器奏者——クラリネット2名、バスクラリネット2名、ヴィオラ2名、チェロ1名、コントラバス1名——が加わり、同じ音のグループから自由に選んだ単音を演奏する。ラインハルトの過去の作品同様、奏者には「音を鳴らしながら可能な限り静かに演奏すること」が指示され、割り当てられた時間内で自由に演奏の時間や量を調整できるほか、長めの休符を挟むことも自由に認められている。
 
『10人の演奏者のために』では、ラインハルトが「方向性を持たない」と呼ぶ音楽を、アンサンブルが抑制した表現と鋭敏な「空白の感覚」を源泉として演奏していく。演奏者たちは、音と沈黙の間のヴェールに近づき、消え入りそうな音から音楽を紡ぎ出す。和声の発展はほぼ偶然に委ねられ、音は暗雲を刻む不確定な光の筋や、静かな水面の微かな揺らぎのように小さく変化しながら蓄積し、また消えていく。時にそれらは静かなテクスチャーへと集まり、あるいは溶け合う。４つの楽章は一つの大きな全体性を構成し、その静寂感は微妙な内部変化によって彩られる。全編を通じて、反復が音楽を静止状態へと導く構造となっている。

Shoko Numao - The Siwnin Sails (elsewhere 037)

"The Siwnin Sails" is a solo album consisting of eight songs written and composed by Shoko Numao, an emerging Japanese singer-songwriter. Numao studied vocal and composition focusing on jazz at Dublin City University in Dublin, Ireland, where she trained to use her voice as an instrument, exploring the expressive possibilities of the voice and laying the foundation for her current approach. Since returning to Japan in 2021, she has been based in Tokyo, performing her own songs, both in collaborations with various musicians and as a solo artist. She has captivated live audiences with her poetic and introspective songs as well as her translucent voice, which occasionally reveals a flickering, ethereal quality. 'The Siwnin Sails' features eight songs written and composed between 2016 and 2024, all performed by Numao herself on guitar and vocals. All eight tracks were recorded in July 2025 at Muriwui in Tokyo. This album follows her first album, 'Live at Ftarri — Lena', released in 2023 on the ftarri label, but it is her debut solo album.

​沼尾翔子 『The Siwnin Sails』 (elsewhere 037)

『The Siwnin Sails』は、新進気鋭の日本人シンガー・ソングライター、沼尾翔子（Shoko Numao）が作詞・作曲を手掛けた８曲入りのアルバム。沼尾はアイルランドのダブリンにあるダブリン・シティ大学でジャズを専門にボーカルと作曲を学び、声を楽器のように使って音を出す訓練を通して、声による表現の可能性を追求し、現在のボーカル表現の基礎を築いた。2021年に帰国後は、東京を拠点に、様々な演奏家との共演やソロでの演奏で自身の曲などを歌い、詩的で内省的な楽曲と独特の揺らぎと透明感のある歌声でライブ観客を魅了してきた。本作『The Siwnin Sails』は、2016年から2024年の間にかけて作曲された８曲を収録、すべて沼尾自身によるギターとボーカルで演奏。全８曲は2025年7月に東京のムリウイで録音された。本作は、2023年にftarriレーベルからリリースされた『Live at Ftarri — Lena』に続く彼女のセカンドアルバムだが、ソロアルバムとしてはこれがデビュー作となる。
