Patrick Farmer is a musician and sound artist working within improvisation, poetry, field recording, and prose composition. He was born in Beckenham, Kent in 1983, and has moved all over the country since then. He was bought his first drum kit when he was twelve and spent six months in India at the age of twenty studying Hindustani Tabla with Pandit Nayan Ghosh. Still most often referred to as a percussionist, though he hasn’t performed on a drum kit for nearly three years, Farmer will commonly enlist the help of a drum or turntable to act as a resonator for natural materials or filtering field recordings.
Farmer performed and exhibited internationally with artists such as Angharad Davies, Michael Pisaro, Sarah Hughes, and Jason Kahn. Festival appearances and residencies include The Wulf (Los Angeles), Ftarri (Tokyo), LMC (London), I & E (Dublin), Geiger (Gothenberg), The Proms (London), Blurred Edges (Hamburg), Forestry Commission England (Cumbria), Q-O2 (Belgium) and MOKS (Estonia). His work has been released on labels such as Another Timbre, Nadukeenumono, Compost and Height, and Winds Measure. New writing: Close Eclogues on Tiptoe Vol. 1, SYZYGY(with Trevor Simmons), and Azimuth, is forthcoming.
Farmer is a co-founder of the online curatorial platform, Compost and Height, co-editor of the new-music journal, Wolf Notes, curator of the Sound I’m Particular lecture series and Significant Landscapes Festival, curator of audiograft, researcher for SARU, and lecturer at Oxford Brookes University.
He has published four books and written compositions for groups such as Apartment House and the Set Ensemble.
