Ryoko Akama is a sound artist/composer/performer. Akama explores the minimal, reductive and abstract aesthetics of sustained tones and concepts of ‘almost nothing’ by performing old synthesizers, DIY devices and found objects. She has completed a PhD ‘Exploring Emptiness’ on music composition at the University of Huddersfield with Monty Adkins and Phillip Thomas, in which she examines silence, time and space through her compositional practice.
She has been funded by University of Huddersfield, Arts Council England, Japan Society, Japan Foundation, Daiwa-Anglo Foundation and Sasakawa foundation. She runs Melange Edition label and co-edits Reductive Journal.
